    Hugo Klempfner was born to Adolf Klempfner (1871-1940) and Gisela Nefeles Klempfner (1878-1942) and had eight siblings. He married Marianne Mizzi Pan (1909-1996) on March 31st 1929 in Prague and they had two children Marta and George Klempfner. He was a Czech water polo player who competed in the men's tournament in the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris.

In 1902, in the year that Hugo Klempfner was born, about 150 thousand United Mine Workers went on strike in eastern Pennsylvania for a wage increase and more suitable hours. They eventually got a 10% raise and their workday was reduced from 10 hours to 9. Because winter was coming and most people at the time heated their homes with coal, President Teddy Roosevelt arbitrated between the owners and the workers - the first time that the Federal government arbitrated in a strike.
