    Hugo Casper Ortbals was married tp Betty M. (Risse) Ortbals and they had children Eileen Gering, Sylvia Stratman and Ralph H Ortbals. According to the 1910 Census, Hugo was 7 years old living in Osage Miller County Missouri on Tuscumbia & Vienna Road with Mary (age 42), Stephen (age 40), and his siblings Addie (9) and Victor (4). Ten years later in the 1920 Census it shows that he was still living at home at age 17 and was a farm laborer. By 1940 Hugo and his wife Betty were 37 and 32 years old living at a home they rented at 3236 Nebraska Avenue in St. Louis Missouri with their children Eileen age 3 and Sylvia age 1. When he registered for the World War 2 draft on February 16th 1942 he worked at Karls Barber Shop, weighed 172 pounds, had a light complexion, brown eyes & hair and was 5' 11" tall. Nov. 19, 1979 beloved husband of Betty M. Ortbals (nee Risse), dear father of Eileen Gering, Sylvia Stratman and Ralph H Ortbals, dear brother of Addie Hasenbein and Victor Ortbals, our dear father-inlaw, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother -in-law, uncle, great-uncle and cousin. Funeral from KUTIS Funeral Home, 2906 Gravois, Wed. Nov. 21, 9:30 a.m. to St. John the Baptist Church. Interment SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery. Member of Barbers Union Local No. 102, St. John's Mens Society and Senior Citizen Group. Masses preferred in parlor Mon 5.pm.

In 1902, in the year that Hugo Ortbals was born, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.

In 1918, when he was 16 years old, on November 11th, an armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, ending the fighting on the Western Front in World War I. This meant a complete defeat of Germany although Germany never formally surrendered. It took another six months of negotiations to sign an actual peace treaty between the warring parties.
