Hurbert James Canavan was born on May 27, 1899 to Thomas P Canavan and Bridget C Canavan, and had siblings Frank T Canavan, Harold T Canavan, Gertrude Irene Sullivan, Helen R Canavan, and Anna Smith. They married Caroline M Gruna, and had children Thomas Joseph Canavan, Mary Ann Canavan, Anna Canavan, Edward Charles Canavan, Theresa Helen Canavan, and Irene Marie Canavan. Hurbert Canavan died at age 54 years old on March 13, 1954.

In 1899, in the year that Hurbert J Canavan was born, the meaning of Chinese "oracle bones" was rediscovered. Farmers in China had been turning up the bones in their fields for generations but most often they were ground up and sold as medicine. The chancellor of the Imperial Academy and a friend noticed, before they ground the bones, that they had writing. The bones had been used around the second millennium BC for divination.

In 1913, this person was only 14 years old when the 17th Amendment, establishing the direct election of U.S. Senators, was adopted. Previously, Senators were elected by state legislatures. As early as 1826, a call to elect senators through popular vote was championed and previous to the 17th amendment, two states had already changed their process. Governors are still able to appoint senators to vacant seats until an election can be held.
