Hyman Lachter 1913 - 1973

Hyman Lachter of Brooklyn, Kings County, NY was born on December 26, 1913 to Kate Lachter and Jacob Lachter. He married Sarah Lachter, and they were married until Sarah's death in May 1971. He had children Audrey Lachter, Judith Lachter, and David Lachter. Hyman Lachter died at age 59 years old in November 1973, and was buried on December 27, 1973 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Queens County.

In 1913, in the year that Hyman Lachter was born, the 17th Amendment, establishing the direct election of U.S. Senators, was adopted. Previously, Senators were elected by state legislatures. As early as 1826, a call to elect senators through popular vote was championed and previous to the 17th amendment, two states had already changed their process. Governors are still able to appoint senators to vacant seats until an election can be held.

In 1947, he was 34 years old when in June, the Marshall Plan was proposed to help European nations recover economically from World War II. It passed the conservative Republican Congress in March of 1948. After World War I, the economic devastation of Germany caused by burdensome reparations payments led to the rise of Hitler. The Allies didn't want this to happen again and the Marshall Plan was devised to make sure that those conditions didn't arise again.
