Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Katherine Idell (Foreman) King was born to Frank Foreman (1908 - 1982) and Videll Frazier Foreman (1909 - 1968). She had siblings James Franklin Foreman, Sr., Francis Foreman, and two more sisters. Idell Foreman married Albert King (1913 - 2003), a veteran of World War II, on November 1, 1950, in Polk Florida, and they had four children: Gladys Loreen, Gloria Jean, Johnnie King and another daughter. In 1959, the King family was living in Lakeland, Florida and Albert was a janitor for the City Health & Welfare Department. While having four children themselves, the couple fostered over 100 children - probably because of their connection with the Health and Welfare Department in Polk County. The Florida Department of Health is in charge of adoption programs, foster care, as well as numerous family support programs. Idell was known as "Mama" to all of her foster children. Staying in Polk County for the rest of her life, she died there at the age of 73, after a full and loving life.

  • Obituary

LAKELAND -- As a foster parent in Polk County, Mrs. Idell Foreman King was known as "Mama" to well over 100 children from all walks of life. "She kept everybody -boys, girls. Sometimes she had white children, or handicapped children. She didn't discriminate. She loved them all," her daughter, Loreen King-Knight of Lakeland said. "She had a little boy that was heavily medicated, and he needed special care and that was a challenge for her. She loved it and she didn't take vacations either." The retired foster parent died of lung failure Monday (Nov. 25, 2002) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 74. Born in Bell, she came to Lakeland from Deland 55 years ago. After working in domestic work, as a nurse's aide, and other various jobs, Mrs. King's love of children inspired her to become a foster parent for 40 years. "She just loved children. I think that was her gift -- she had the patience of Job. She made you feel so welcome in her home, and she was a great cook," King-Knight said, describing her mother as a very beautiful, devoted Christian lady. "We grew up with a lot of children. At one point, there were 13 children in this house, and there was room for everybody and plenty to eat." King-Knight said that the children that Mrs. King fostered continued to stay in touch with her over the years and still referred to her as "Mama". She was known for her ability to cook and her daughter said that all of her food was good, especially her pound cake and barbecued chicken. "When I left home, I used to come back every day and eat," she said. She was an active member of Sixth Street Church of Christ. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. King is survived by her husband of 52 years, Albert King; daughters, Gloria King-Ackerman, Lakeland, Sandra M. King, Tampa; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Sixth Street Church of Christ. Services will follow at noon at the church.

The Kings raised my first cousins. While visiting my cousins, I got to know the Kings, and I am honored to have been in their presence. They were a beautiful and loving couple. "Love is what love does♥️"
