Irene Eveline Devereux of Fitzroy North Australia was born in 1898 in Fitzroy North to Louis Andrew Devereux and Sarah Rhoda Ann (Kemp) Devereux. She had siblings Louisa Ann Jane (Devereux) Pretty, Madalena Sarah (Devereux) Harris, Vere May Devereux, and Stella Mayfield (Devereux) Ludlow. She married Roy Alexexander Hince Punton in 1931, and died at age 74 years old on June 6, 1973 in VIC. Irene Devereux was buried at Templestowe Cemetery in Templestowe, City of Manningham County.

In 1898, in the year that Irene Eveline Devereux was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
