Isaac Thomas Henderson 1881 - 1953

Isaac Thomas Henderson was born on July 10, 1881 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia United States to Mary Elizabeth (Richardson) Henderson and William Thomas Henderson, and had siblings George Washington Henderson, William Edgar Henderson, Rawley Ellis Henderson, Florence Prudence (Henderson) Hill, Pendleton Pope Henderson, Dailey Ellen (Henderson) Cole, Bernice Carson (Henderson) Booth, and Chesley Martin Henderson. He married Toy Pearle (Jones) Henderson on January 18, 1903 in Danville, and they were married until Toy's death on March 6, 1920 in Pittsylvania County. They had children Percy Harold Henderson, Mary Ellen Henderson Dodd, Catherine Henderson, Thelma Talmadge Henderson Godsey, Garnett Pearl Henderson Rich Gauldin, Glentys Lee Henderson Mitchell, and Ardie Carson Henderson McIntosh. He also married Mary Elsie Strange Henderson on March 13, 1921 in Halifax, Halifax County, and they were married until Mary's death on June 2, 1951 in Halifax. Isaac Henderson died at age 71 years old on February 5, 1953 in Pamplin, Appomattox County, and was buried on February 7, 1953 at Family Cemetery in Kentuck, Pittsylvania County.

    Henderson Rites Planned Sunday Funeral will be held at 2 p. m.. Sunday in the Scott's Funeral Home Chapel in Chatham, Va., for Isaac Thomas Henderson, 72-year-old resident of Paces, Va., and father of three Greensboro residents. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Kentuck, Va. Henderson, born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, was the son of the late William and Mary Richardson Henderson. He was a retired farmer and postal employee and a member of Rock Spring Methodist Church in Ringgold, Va. He died Thursday at Crest Haven Home in Pamplin, Va. Married twice, his first wife the former Toy Jones, died 33 years ago and his second wife, the former Effie Strange, died two years ago. He is survived by one son, Percy Henderson of Lynchburg, Va.; six daughters, Mrs. E. W. Dodd of Charlotte Courthouse, Va., Mrs. Essie Godsey of Lynchburg, Mrs. W. D. Gauldin, Mrs. J. H. Mitchell and Mrs. H. C. McIntosh of Greensboro and Miss Catherine Henderson of Pamplin, Va.; one brother, Chesley Henderson of Danville, Va., and three sisters, Mrs. W. B. Booth, Mrs. W. B. Cole and Mrs. Florence Hill of Ringgold.

In 1881, in the year that Isaac Thomas Henderson was born, on October 26th, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" happened in Tombstone, Arizona. The gunfight lasted only 30 seconds - the Earps and Doc Holliday on one side and the "Cowboys" on the other side. The McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton of the Cowboys were killed. Two of the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday were wounded.

In 1910, by the time he was 29 years old, the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated. U.S. publisher W.D. Boyce was visiting England when he became lost in the London fog. An unknown Boy Scout helped him find his way out, declining a tip (he said that he was a Boy Scout and was doing his good deed for the day). Boyce was so impressed that he incorporated the Boy Scouts of America when he returned home. Its purpose was "to teach boys patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred values."
