Isabella (Harley) French of Hotham Heights, VIC Australia was born in 1871 in Yackandandah, Indigo Shire County to Joseph Frederick Harley and Ruth Brummidge Harley. She had siblings James Henry Harley, Ruth Susannah Mary Ann Harley, and Emma Evangeline Harley. She married Charles Robert French in 1890, and had children Helen Jessie French and Reta Isabel Stuart French. Isabella French died at age 47 years old on May 6, 1919.

In 1871, in the year that Isabella (Harley) French was born, on March 22nd, William Holden became the first governor of a U.S. state - North Carolina - to be impeached and removed from office. His impeachment and removal was related to charges arising from his attempted suppression of the Ku Klux Klan.

In 1886, at the age of just 15 years old, Isabella was alive when on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
