Isabella R (Robinson) Nable's History: 1869 - 1967

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

She was our paternal great grandmother who lived at the end of Greenwood Street next to the Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, where she is buried. She lived upstairs in the two-story house her husband Gustavis built; he also built one-story houses on Greenwood St. and called the area Pittsburgh Heights. Isabella was a red-head as a young woman, who was the mother of Margaret, William G., and Raymond. Isabella tended chickens in a coop and a created a lovely garden with a small water trough (about 9' x 9') on the acreage behind the house that connected to Nable Place., now misspelled as Noble on maps and the street sign. Isabella and Gus managed the hardware store on Church Street in downtown Orlando; they also owned the little store or leased it at the corner of Mills Ave. and Noble Pl. where they sold groceries and incidentals. Her upstairs screened-in porch overlooked Lake Greenwood, at that time covered in green duck weed from pollution. In the early 1950s, she had dark mahogany furniture with animal heads as table feet, a large colorful glass-shade floor lamp, antique rifles hung on one wall, small paintings on glass, and a 5-gallon jug full of old coins, with some gold pieces at the bottom. Her brass bed was spectacular. My father said she was descended from the McAlpine clan; Isabella's mother/father and grandparents emigrated from Scotland just before her birth. During the final years of her 97 years, her son Wm. G. brought her bananas at the nursing home, which she enjoyed mightily. (Eugenie VanHoten Nable 11.30.2018)

In 1899, Isabella was 30 years old when the meaning of Chinese "oracle bones" was rediscovered. Farmers in China had been turning up the bones in their fields for generations but most often they were ground up and sold as medicine. The chancellor of the Imperial Academy and a friend noticed, before they ground the bones, that they had writing. The bones had been used around the second millennium BC for divination.
