    Ita Clare Buttrose was born to Charles Oswald Buttrose, a journalist and, at one time, the editor of The Daily Mirror in Sydney, Australia, and Mary Clare Catherine Rodgers (1913-1994). She had brothers Julian Buttrose and William Gerald Buttrose (1944 - 2006). Ita's parents divorced while she was in her teens. Ita Buttrose married Alasdair Macdonald in 1963 and they divorced in 1976. They had two children. She then married Peter Sawyer in 1979. They divorced in 1981.

    Since 2019, she has been the Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Previously, Ita edited Cleo magazine and was editor of The Australian Women's Weekly, the Publisher of Australian Consolidated Press Women's Division, and Editor-In Chief of the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph. She was also the chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on AIDS and founded her own publishing company, Capricorn Publishing. Ita has also published nine books and was a regular on the television show "Beauty and the Beast" in the 1990s, as well as appearing on numerous television shows.

Did you know?
In 1942, in the year that Ita Buttrose was born, from January 7th through April 9th, the Battle of Bataan was fought in the Philippines. At the end of the battle, the U.S. and Filipino forces surrendered and a three-year occupation of the Philippines by Japan began. Between 60,000 and 80,000 American and Filipino soldiers surrendered and were marched around 60 to 69 miles - most were beaten, abused, or killed. Named the Bataan Death March, it was later declared to be a war crime.

In 1957, on September 24th, the "Little Rock Nine" (nine African-American students) entered Little Rock High School. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had previously prevented the students from entering the school at the beginning of the term with the Arkansas National Guard - they blocked the door. President Eisenhower ordered federal troops - the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army - to guard the students and allow them entry.
