  • Obituary

(As written by Crystal Jean, his oldest grandchild) He was born in Oklahoma.to a farming family. He was weighed in on a cotton scale, a ten pound boy. He had no middle name and never claimed the initials were more than just that, two letters. It was a fad of the time. . . He grew to be 6'4 and always talked about playing ball in Oklahoma or the Navy. He worked summers in the cotton fields to pay for his basketball shoes. He would send the money home to his folks. Bought his Momma a kitchen set one year. He always thought of others first. He was a hard working jack of all trades. He built houses that they lived in or sold for extra income. He was a good looking man his whole life and he knew it! He once had three girlfriends show up at a basketball tournament, they all lived in different towns and he had to hide in the locker room. He played ball in the navy and got lots of fan mail, bad on the navy, they sent it to his new wife! He was married for 54 years to Jean Oxford. She passed four years after him and was never the same after his death. He never had a cavity, but got sick and died in nine months due to Mesothelioma lung cancer. It was a shock I still grapple with, this vibrant healthy as horse man got sick so quickly and suddenly. I am his oldest grand daughter. He was my Papa, my Father he took the time and raised me really. He retired when I was very young, if I was out of school or sick I was with him. I had him to myself until I was six,.He attended every event in my childhood from FFA to Mock trail competitions. We went to Arlington High football games every weekend my whole life. .I usually spent weekends and vacations living with my grandparents and hanging out with my Papa, he was a good cheat at Monopoly, there was a strict show your card rule, he won the beauty contest a lot if you didn't enforce that rule. I loved him more than I can express. Any time a Laker game was on he was watching it most of the time even if it was school night I went up to watch it with him. When I was older I would walk out of dates, take breaks at jobs or stop my car to call him for the last two minutes of games. He used to get me the Season Ticket after I got married and moved out of town so we could continue to watch games and talk on the phone together. His favorite thing to do with company was bring out his scrap book from the Navy. It has old clippings of games stats and publicity photos. It was what he left to me when he passed. I treasure it. When I walked down the hall to marry, he was escorting me. I held his hand as he left this life and am so grateful to have had him as long as we did, but it wasn't long enough. He was surrounded by love and family till his last breath. I miss him, everyday. Official Obituary.
