This is a nan that was bigger than life. Handsome strong and never quit. He married Jane Ramona Stevens. They met at a dance. No one could keep up with him dancing. They adopted a baby when she and took her home when she was only two hours old. Neither could have children. I am that baby. They also had a foster child they adopted, James Albert. He was 9 years older than I was. Unfortunately the marriage did not last. They divorced when I was 4 years old. My Dad has service stations and eventually had his brothers and nephews to run his service stations. He was a magnet to women. They loved him. There was never a problem there. My Dad grew up during the depression. His Father died early on of appendicitis, leaving his Mother Willie Mae Viola Greer with five kids. Delbert, Leon, Louise, my Dad Jack and Fleda Nell. Willie Mae was the Mother and Dale I believe was the Father’s name. He died before I came along. My Dad Jack, told me of a time that he was in 3rd grade and the teacher asked him to go to the front of the class. When he did and faced the class of kids the teacher gave him a charity bag to take home to the family. It humiliated him so much that he never went back to school. He left school in the third grade. Such a shame because he was so intelligent and so driven he could have done anything he wanted. He sold newspapers downtown to help his Mother. His Mom had average of piney woods. She felt pressured to sell the woods to take care of her large family. She got 50 cents an acre. A paper company bought the average. His Mother ran a resteraunt for a time after dark she washed rich women’s clothes on a washboard and tended her garden. These things marked my Dad. He was going to be rich if it killed him. He admired people with money and felt they were better than other folks. When I was in the picture Attorneys and Judges were regulars at the house. He wanted me to grow up and be someone in this group of people he looked up to. That did not happen. When he died he had amassed several million dollars. His wife at the time Betty Rochelle Greer got his money. Marrying him Once he was on his decline and could not read. She changed his will and had him sign it. That money means nothing compared to who my Dad was. I can’t explain how funny and compassionate he was. He also had a horrible temper. His escapades and ventures could fill a book, that us hiw I think of him. His life should be a movie. It would be a romantic one. An adventure. My Dad was bigger than life itself. I miss him.

I was told the nationality is Irish. His family were dirt farmers. I don’t know of any of the family past my Dad’s mother. She told me she had five sisters. I gave a picture of them. My Grandmother was so pretty in the picture, long wavy dark hair and blue eyes.

Yes he was in the army. He helped to make the first runway in Greenland. He also volunteered to be in an Army study for a drug they were researching. They had him under observation in a white hospital room. He said everything was white. He thought he was going out of his mind and that he would die. They had given him LSD.

He went to a Humble Oil school and began a service station. After several years he had many service stations with his male family members running them. Later in life he was a bailiff for the Grand jury in Jefferson County Texas in Judge King’s court. He was very involved in politics. Since I am not a political person, I really don’t know all he did.

The boys home outside of Beaumont Texas was something he was involved in, there were so many things he was involved in, parks in the city things like that, I remember he hired a young man at the service station that was trying to help his Mother support the family because she was a widow. My Dad helped him to enter the police academy and become an officer. He was such a nice young guy. A bit older than me. He was able to help his whole family by becoming aPolice Officer. What always stood out to me about this is that this sweet young man is black. My Dad always acted so prejudiced. He was A George Wallace supporter. We had many arguments where I always ended up in tears because of his views. But, when it came to kids and trying to help their Mother’s and family he would not be stopped by color in this instance. He would call this young man his son. At his funeral he was the only black man there. He hugged my neck and joking said that he was my Dad’s son. The rest of the family bristled up and his wife Betty said” Jack doesn’t have any children.” She was so awful.
