Jack Ryskind's History: 1925 - 2012

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

I do not know where Jack was born. I do know he was a teacher in Plainville, Ct where he lived until a couple of years after his retirement. He was part of our family even though we were not related, he was treated respectfully as our uncle. Jack always was there when you needed an ear for advise. He adopted a member of our family as his own son, Jesus Ryskind, who tragically passed away years before him. We were sad not to know of his passing. He was such a great human being and it is so sad not to had been there during his final days.

Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
