Jacob Dykstra was born in 1914 to Edward 'Ebbe' Dykstra and Henderika (Iwema), and had siblings Helen Slater, George Dykstra, Anjean (Dykstra) Plankeel, Ethel (Dykstra) Auwerda, and Gertrude June (Dykstra) Huisman. Jacob Dykstra died at age 5 years old in 1919.

    Jacob was 5 years old when he contracted Diphtheria. Both he and his brother John, age 3, who also was afflicted, were removed from their home never to return. The two brothers passed away six weeks apart from each other and are believed to be buried in Evergreen Park, Illinois.

In 1914, in the year that Jacob Dykstra was born, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.

In 1919, in the year of Jacob Dykstra's passing, the "Black Sox Scandal" rocked baseball fans during the World Series. Eight players on the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series, thus allowing the Cincinnati Reds to win, and making money off of the losses. All of the players were found not guilty by a jury but the fallout lasted for decades. The players were banned from baseball even though they were found innocent.
