In 1940, after the Germans invaded the Netherlands, Jacob went into hiding with his aunt. He is well known for the letters he wrote to his parents and grandparents during hiding, which are now on display in a museum. This is the translated text of his last letter, written on 16/05/1944 (): "Dear Oma and Opa, Heartfelt thanks for the guilders, Oma. How are you actually doing? Here, everything is going well. These animals will be in the terrarium: a frog, a snake, a tortoise and a lizard. Opa, I planted brown beans and peas. I'm allowed to have caterpillars because they are going to become butterflies. I hope you have great fun on Uncle Koo's birthday. Oma and Opa, I send both of you good wishes on the occasion of the birthday of your only son. Please congratulate him for me. Lots of kisses and regards, Jhm (Jacob Hijman Marcus)" Jacob and his aunt were caught on June 8, 1944, and imprisoned in Westerbork. They were moved to the Terezin Ghetto on September 4, 1944, and deported to Auschwitz on October 23, 1944, where Jacob was immediately gassed to death upon his arrival two days later, on October 25, 1944.
