  • Introduction

    Jacob was a farmer and also sold lime to other farmer's. He enlisted in the spring of 1864 in Company E 162nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was given the rank of Corporal. Jacob served one hundred and twenty six days, they were sent to Cincinnati to guard the Prsion holding Confederate Soldiers. The War Department for the Union Army was concerned thta Moragn would take his raid through ohio and would try to liberate the soldiers being held in the prison.

In 1824, in the year that Jacob Holl was born, on December 3rd, the U.S. presidential election of 1824 was finally decided. None of the four candidates for U.S. President gained a majority of the electoral votes so for the first - and last - time the election was thrown into the U.S. House of Representatives for a decision, called a contingent election. John Quincy Adams won on the first vote. Another candidate, Andrew Jackson, never accepted the results and accused Adams and Henry Clay - the Speaker of the House - of striking a "corrupt bargain".

In 1835, on January 30th, the first known attempt to kill a sitting President of the United States occurred just outside the United States Capitol Building. President Andrew Jackson was leaving the building after the funeral of South Carolina Representative Warren R. Davis. An Englishman, Richard Lawrence - who was unemployed and possibly mentally ill - stepped out and attempted to shoot. His gun misfired so he pulled out another gun - which also misfired. He was immediately caught.
