He was in a relationship with Sarah (Shofe) Rouanzoin, and had children James Rouanzoin, Adam Rouanzoin, Mary Ann (Rouanzoin) Harshman, Eliza Jane (Rouanzoin) Ball, Martha (Rouanzoin) Thompson, Catherine (Rouanzoin) Balding, Elizabeth (Rouanzoin) Newlon, and Jacob Rouanzoin. In 1803, when he was just 5 years old, the first public library in the United States - free to everyone - opened in Salisbury, Connecticut. Damage to books was most often caused by "greasing" - candle wax dripping onto the books. Candles were the only source of light in the evenings.

In 1808, when he was just 10 years old, on February 6th, the ship Topaz - which had sailed out of Boston, hunting seals - rediscovered Pitcairn Island. The mutineers from the HMS Bounty had gone there after the mutiny in April of 1789. Only one HMS Bounty mutineer was still alive, John Adams, who had changed his name to Alexander Smith.
