James A Duke was born on October 7, 1911 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas United States to Elijah Jefferson Duke and Mary Elizabeth (Evans) Duke, and had siblings Clyde Jefferson Duke, Cleo Duke, Roy Lee Duke, and Mary Duke. James Duke died at age 91 years old on April 18, 2003.

In 1911, in the year that James A Duke was born, the United States Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in May. John D. Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.

In 1948, when he was 37 years old, on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
