James Abraham Braybrook 1883 - 1957

James Abraham Braybrook of Ballarat, City of Ballarat County, VIC Australia was born in 1883 in Sebastopol to Isaac Braybrook and Emily Anne Starkey Bowerman. He had siblings Isaac Braybrook, Henry Braybrook, Ernest Albert Braybrook, Eliza May Braybrook, Bertie Braybrook, Cecilia Emily (Braybrook) Venner, Andrew Arthur Braybrook, and John Starkey Braybrook. James Braybrook married Annie Margaret Bradley in 1912, and died at age 73 years old in January 1957 in Ballarat.

In 1883, in the year that James Abraham Braybrook was born, on June 16th, children at a children's variety show in Victoria Hall began rushing the stage area and lobby for promised prizes. In the stampede, 183 children of the 1100 present - most of them 3 to 4 years old - were crushed and asphyxiated.

In 1912, he was 29 years old when in October, former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot, but not killed, while campaigning for another term as President with the newly created Bull Moose (Progressive) Party. John Schrank was a Bavarian-born saloon-keeper from New York who had been stalking Roosevelt when he shot him just before a campaign speech. Shot in the chest (and showing the audience his bloody shirt), Roosevelt went on to give a 55 to 90 minute talk (reports vary on the length) before being treated for the injury. After 8 days in the hospital, Roosevelt went back on the campaign trail.
