    JAMES T. ABSHIRE SERVED WITH COMPANY F., 2ND. INDIANA CAVALRY DURING THE CIVIL WAR AS A PRIVATE. HE SERVED 3 YEARS AND 5 MONTHS WITH THE 2ND. JAMES ABSHIRE WAS BORN IN ROANOKE VA. IN 1844 AND HIS FAMILY MOVED TO SULPHER SPRINGS, INDIANA WHERE THEY LIVED WHEN HE INLISTED AT AGE 17. HE MUSTERED IN SEPT. 18, 1861 AND IN DEC. 1861 HE AND THE 2ND. INDIANA CAVALRY MOVED TO KY. WITH THE ARMY OF THE OHIO. CIVIL WAR BATTLES THAT CO. F, 2ND. INDIANA CAVALRY WERE ENGAGED IN WERE MANY: SKIRMISH BOLING GREEN - OCCULPATION OF NASHVILLE - BATTLE OF SHILOH - BATTLE OF PERRYVILLE - BATTLE OF STONES RIVER - BATTLE OF CHICKAMAUGA - DEFENSE OF NASHVILLE AND CHATTANOOGA RAILROAD. (THE 2ND. INDIANA CAVALRY, F COMPANY WAS FEATURED IN HARPERS WEEKLY, OCT. 31ST. 1863) PRIVATE ABSHIRE WAS CAPTURED BY THE REBELS IN THE ATLANTA CAMPAIGN IN 1864 WHILE CROSSING A RIVER. HE WAS HELD IN THE CONFEDERATE PRISONS OF ANDERSONVILLE, GEORGIA AND SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA AND WAS EXCHANGED IN 1865. HE MUSTERED OUT OF THE SERVICE ON JAN. 14, 1865 AFTER SERVING 3 YEARS AND 5 MONTHS. JAMES ABSHIRE WAS A MEMBER OF THE G.A.R. POST 119, MIDDLETOWN, INDIANA. SONS NAME : VEO. CARLTON ABSHIRE, MIDDLETOWN, INDIANA.

In 1844, in the year that James Abshire was born, on July 3rd, the last known pair of great auk were killed in Iceland. A flightless bird, the average auk was about 33 inches tall and weighed about 11 pounds with a black back and white belly. They were most often found along the coast of Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Canada Great Britain, Ireland - and sometimes as far south as Spain.
