    James Albin Crislip Sr was born to Johnson Ward Crislip (1885 - 1940) and Elsie Lenora Albin (1895 - 1950). He had siblings Virginia June (1916 - 1971) and Wilma Ray Crislip (1920 - 1999). James enlisted in the United States Navy on January 5, 1944 and was discharged on February 13, 1946. He was a veteran of World War II. James married Zilphle Burks (1930 - 1970). They had 2 daughters - including Melissa Kay (1960 - 2018) - and one son. He then married Judy Crislip with whom he had two sons and a daughter. He was a former Alderman in Germantown and a senior partner of Crislip, Philip and Associates, a law firm.

In 1926, in the year that James Albin Crislip Sr was born, on October 31st, Harry Houdini died in Michigan. Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.
