I went to school with Jim. For a while, he lived only a block away. At Warren Glen and Phillipsburg High School, I had a teen-age crush in Jim, though he never knew it. He had the deepest, darkest eyes and thick, dark hair. Of course, we went out separate ways after high school. My parents continued to live in Aloha. When I would visit with my family and stayed overnight, sometimes I would hear footsteps and “ whooping” outside their windows. It frightened me. But my Dad ( Bob Bullock) would say, “ That’s just Jimmy. He’s having a bad night again; flashbacks about his time in Nam. I’ll go out and talk to him and see that he gets home. “ And that’s what my Dad would do. Then one day, I guess Jim went missing. My Dad went searching for him. At the end of Pohatcong Street was a drop- off to the railroad tracks. Apparently, Jim couldn’t take the flashbacks any more. He had laid himself down in the tracks and waited for the next train. My dear Dad found his body, as I understand it. I can’t imagine. My God, Jim, I wish I would have known. You were not only a casualty of war, you were a victim of society’s ignorance of the devastating effects of PTSD. We know now. But we can’t bring you back. Oh Jim, I pray that you have found the peace in death that you never found in life. We love you. We miss you. We will meet again.

I used to live on Mellicks Woods Road in Warren Glen, N.J., which is right outside of Phillipsbutg, N.J. James Aravich was often seen riding or pushing his bicycle on Mellicks Woods Road. I was a freshman i high school. Shortly before his passing, I can remember him pushing his bicycle up the hill going past my house and saying, "Hi!" and smiling at me. I will always remember that moment for the rest of my life.
