He married Nettie B Staib (1918–) on July 24, 1940 in Kernstown, Virginia, USA. Shortly after getting married, James McCreanor registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, at the age of 35 in Warren, Ohio. Prior to his military service, James was employed at Ohio Lamp Works, showcasing his commitment to his civilian occupation. On November 6, 1942, James made the courageous decision to enlist in the military. He joined the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component with no branch assignment, indicating his flexibility and adaptability to various roles within the armed forces.
