James grew up in Stamford, CT and was raised by his aunt and uncle Werner Liepolt. He was a 1970 graudate of Stamford High School and later went on to attend Norwalk Community College. He worked as a material handler for Pitney-Bowes of Stamford, CT. At the young age of 24, James Werdelin passed away on July 10, 1977 in Rutland, Vermont.

He then moved to Stamford, CT in the 1930's and married Mary there on June 26, 1943. He passed away on November 17, 1957 in Boston, MA. His mother, Mary Gillespie Stead, was born on June 5, 1922 in Bridgeport, CT and grew up in Stamford, CT. She married Charles there in 1943, and raised their family in Stamford. She passed away there on August 6, 1955. Her parents, James' maternal grandparents were James Stead (1889-1942) of Glasgow, Scotland and Williamina Bruce Robertson Wilson Roxburgh (1891-1968) of Garelochhead, Dumbarton.
