James Cowperthwaite 1857 - 1934

James Cowperthwaite of Cheltnm Australia was born in 1857 in Melbourne, VIC to James Cowperthwaite and Eleanor Hodgson. He had a brother John James Cowperthwaite. He married Minnie Durston Cowperthwaite in 1884, and had children Ellen Cowperthwaite, Ellen Cowperthwaite, Thomas Hugh Cowperthwaite, Thomas Hugh Cowperthwaite, Annie Cowperthwaite, and Florence Jean Cowperthwaite. James Cowperthwaite died at age 77 years old in 1934 in Geelong, Greater Geelong City County.

In 1857, in the year that James Cowperthwaite was born, on March 2nd, the largest slave auction in US history was begun. Called "The Weeping Time", the auction lasted 2 days. Slave owner Pierce M. Butler - who had inherited the slaves 20 years before but was now deeply in debt - sold 436 men, women, children, and infants, all of whom were kept in stalls at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. The people were held for weeks before the auction in the horse stalls.

In 1864, at the age of merely 7 years old, James was alive when on April 22nd, the Coinage Act of 1864 was passed by Congress. It mandated that "In God We Trust" was to be placed on all United States coins and created a 2 cent coin. Later - in 1956 - "In God We Trust" replaced "E Pluribus Unum" - which means out of many, one - as the national motto.
