He had siblings James Cuthbert Stedman, William Henry Stedman, Horace Richard Stedman, Laura Agnes Stedman, Percy Leggatt Stedman, Edgar Plantaganet Stedman, Charles Edward Stedman, and Laura Agnes White. He married Lesbia Allee Stedman, and had a child Ailsa Allee Stedman. James Stedman died at age 69 years old in 1930 in Brighton.

Winning by a plurality of the popular vote, 39.8% - there were many candidates, Douglas was the strongest - he decisively won the electoral college with 180 votes. He was the first President to emerge from the newly created Republican Party.

In 1897, at the age of 36 years old, James was alive when on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".
