    James D Mershon was born on August 30th, 1918 in Illinois to James Wallace Mershon (1885 - 1957) and Elsie Marie Dever (1900 - 1986). His father was born in New York and his mother was born in Kansas. He had one brother, George Wallace Mershon (1920 - 1986). A veteran, James Mershon served in the United States Army Airl corps for 4 1/2 years during World War II. He was aerial photographer in the service. James Mershon married Alice Marie Higbie (1920 - 1992) on March 3rd, 1946 in Matawan, New Jersey. After Alice died, James married Marjorie Biel, who survived him. He didn't have children. James died on May 23rd, 2008 in Toms River, Ocean County, New Jersey at the age of 89. He is buried in Christ Church Cemetery in South Amboy, New Jersey.

When he married Alice Higbie in 1946, he was working for the State of New Jersey Board of Health as the official photographer. He retired from DuPont Photo Products in Parlin, New Jersey and was a loan officer for DuPont Employees Federal Credit Union until his death.

    On his 1940 World War II draft card, James was described as being 5 feet, 7 1/2 inches tall and as weighing 125 pounds. He had gray eyes, brown hair, and a "light" complexion. He had a scar under his chin. James married twice: after his first wife, Alice, died, he married Marjorie Biel, who survived him. He never had children. James was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 232, Matawan. He was also a past master of Matwan Lodge Number 192 of the Free and Accepted Masons. His hobbies included surf fishing, photography and being with friends and family.

In 1918, in the year that James D Mershon was born, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.

In 1933, James was just 15 years old when on December 5th, the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. The 21st Amendment said "The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed." Alcohol was legal again! It was the only amendment to the Constitution approved for the explicit purpose of repealing a previously existing amendment. South Carolina was the only state to reject the Amendment.
