He was married to Jeanette Yvette (Gendron) in March 1943 at Justice Court in Millerton, Dutchess County, New York, and they were together until James' death on July 14, 1976. James McGlinchey had a child Sharyn Ann McGlinchey.

    Jim's parents were from Maine, USA and Jim was raised there. Their family were proud to be Scots-Irish and his mother Ferol made sure to tell her grandchildren that they were Protestant Irish of the Black Watch clan and members of the Order of Orangemen. Wearing green on St. Patrick's Day was forbidden.
  • Early Life & Education

    When Jim was in high school his asthma was very bad. He dropped out for a year and went to live with Alton Dyer on his farm. He returned to Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School a year later than his class.
  • Military Service

    James hid his asthma from the recruiter and enlisted in the Army on WWII. He was assigned to Infantry and became the company cook. He received the Purple Heart after he was injured in battle. He was riding in a tank and felt like he couldn't breathe so he opened the turret and popped out. He was shot in the back by friendly fire and sent to a hospital for several months. During his service Jeanette worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft.
  • Professional Career

    Before WW2 he worked in a grocery store. In the Army he was an Infantry cook. After he came home he worked several jobs including Dairy Herd Tester (undulant fever). He went on to work for a Texaco gas station in Rocky Hill. CT and later bought it. He sold it when Jeanette was transferred to North Grosvenordale, CT. He then went into auto parts sales and was very pleased to be named NAPA Salesman of the Year.
  • Personal Life & Family

    After the war Jim spent time at the VFW and he and Jeanette would go dancing there on weekend nights. They also enjoyed playing canasta and were part of a group that played every week.

James was from several generations of alcoholics though he drank only the occasional dark ale. His father was a mean drunk and his grandfather was murdered on the way home from a bar. His father went out in the boat one day and never returned. His body was found two weeks later washed up on shore.
