He was married to Margaret Copeland Britter in 1869, and had children Elizabeth Charlotte Elliott, Caroline Constance Elliott Britter, Margaret Alice Elliott, James Copeland Elliott, Florence Ethel Elliott, and Emma May Elliott. James Elliott died at age 44 years old on February 19, 1885 in VIC Australia, and was buried at Boroondara General Cemetery 430 High St, in Kew, City of Boroondara County.
