James Frederick Charles Hurford of Melbourne, Victoria Australia was born in 1865 in Collingwood, City of Yarra County, VIC to Isabella Cunningham Hurford and William Hurford. He had siblings Isabella Henrietta Hurford, Emily Matilda Cunningham Hurford, Thomas Walter Hurford, Ada Bryant Hurford, Lily Hurford, Daisey Hurford, Rose Hurford, Clara Ann Hurford, Walter Thomas Hurford, and William Alex Cunningham Hurford. He married Esther Martha Sarah Ann (Yewdall) Hurford in 1889, and had children Aleck William James Lawson Hurford, Ruth Ada Fanny Verner Hurford, Alice Alma Burnett Hurford, and Irene Myrtle Cuttle Hurford. James Hurford died at age 61 years old on November 15, 1927 in Melbourne East, Victoria.

A little over a month later, he would be assassinated by a Confederate sympathizer - 4 days after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, which had effectively ended the Civil War.

In 1884, at the age of 19 years old, James was alive when on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
