James Gormly was born in 1838 to William Gormly. He was in a relationship with Margaret (Hatty) Gormly, and had children Mariah Elizabeth (Gormly) Richards, Alexander Gormly, Margaret Gormly, and Mary (Gormly) Rowe. James Gormly died at age 64 years old on June 23, 1903 in Barooga, Berrigan Shire Council County, NSW Australia, and was buried at Barooga Cemetery in Barooga.

  • Introduction

    The Cobram Courier, Victoria. 25th June 1903. DEATH. - An old resident of Barooga in the person of Mr. James Gormly died on Tuesday after a prolonged and painful illness. He had been suffering for some time from chronic pleurisy, which proved fatal at 10:30 on Tuesday morning. The deceased leaves a widow and a large family to mourn his loss.

In 1838, in the year that James Gormly was born, on February 24th, Representatives William J. Graves (Kentucky) and Jonathan Cilley (Maine) fought a duel with rifles. They faced off at 94 yards. Cilley was hit on Graves' third try - in the femoral artery - and bled to death on the dueling field. The Panic of 1837 and Jackson's presidency had caused an extremely partisan Congress and the duel was a result.

In 1841, when he was only 3 years old, on February 4th, James Morris wrote about Groundhog Day in his diary - the first known reference to the day in North America. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."
