He had siblings Elizabeth August Jackel, Sarah Jackell, and Edward John Jackel. He married Louisa Jane Johns Jackel in 1890, and had children Oliver George Jackel, Ethel May Jackel, Horace James Jackel, Aubrey Lewis Jackel, Allan Baden Jackel, Cecil William Jackel, and Wallace Edgar Jackel. James Jackel died at age 81 years old on April 24, 1945 in Dandenong, City of Greater Dandenong County.

In 1863, in the year that James Herman Jackel was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1888, he was 25 years old when on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.
