James Heywood of Dunolly Australia was born in 1868 in Dunolly, Victoria to Hannah Courtney and James Heywood. He had siblings William Mills Heywood, Mary Elizabeth Heywood, Alice Heywood, William Courtney Heywood, Clara Anna Heywood, and John Heywood. He married Mary Florence Hughes, and had children William James Ephraim Heywood, Mary Florence Heywood, John Frederick Heywood, and Sophia Belinda May Heywood. James Heywood died at age 53 years old on April 6, 1922 in East Melbourne.

In 1868, in the year that James Heywood was born, on February 24th, three days after his attempt to dismiss United States Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton - who was opposed to Johnson's leniency towards the former Confederacy - the US House of Representatives voted (126 to 47) to impeach Andrew Johnson. Johnson was later acquitted in the Senate by one vote short of the required 2/3rds.Senators crossed party lines to keep Johnson as President.
