James Hulbert Black 1838 - 1904

James Hulbert Black of Edinburgh Australia was born in 1838 to Alex Black and Mary Hague Black. James Black had siblings Margaret Black, Alex Black, George Black, Gordon Black, and Anthony Black. He married Jane Price Howey in 1870. He also married Mary Ann Puddyfoot Black in 1872. They had children Arthur Black, Annie Black, Walter Patrick Black, William James Black, William James Black, Jane Frances Black, Frederick Black, Edward Hume Black, Alexander Black, Alf Black, Adelaide Black, Ada Adelaide George, David Black, Charles Black, Percy Black, David Black, George Thomas Black, and Patrick Walter Black. James Black died at age 66 years old in 1904 in Whalla.

In 1838, in the year that James Hulbert Black was born, on February 24th, Representatives William J. Graves (Kentucky) and Jonathan Cilley (Maine) fought a duel with rifles. They faced off at 94 yards. Cilley was hit on Graves' third try - in the femoral artery - and bled to death on the dueling field. The Panic of 1837 and Jackson's presidency had caused an extremely partisan Congress and the duel was a result.
