James Kenton "Kent" Pleasants Obituary
Love of family, friends, and the wide community that he cared for so deeply. These words come to mind when describing James Kenton “Kent” Pleasants, 66, of Lexington, Kentucky, who passed away on March 8, 2025. Kent was born in Covington, Kentucky on July 2, 1958, to Mary Lou (nee Holmes) and James “Jim” Pleasants. Kent and his sister, Laure, spent their childhood in Northern Kentucky.
Kent is the beloved husband of Cathy Pleasants to whom he was married for 24 years. His love for Cathy was evident in the life they built together. A life they filled with shared aspirations, laughter, and a strong, abiding partnership. Together, Kent and Cathy were most proud of their family. Kent was the father to Ryan Pleasants, Carmen Pleasants, Cole Pleasants, and Lauren Ashley German (Joey). Kent was also the proudest grandfather and beloved “Bigun” to Hadley and Hannah.
Kent graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. From there he began his career at Deloitte, where he became a CPA. At Deloitte and Jerrico he excelled at corporate accounting. Kent moved from corporate accounting to public accounting at Virginia Dulworth CPA, which later became Dulworth, Breeding, Karns, and Pleasants. Kent then went on to become a tax director at Blue and Company, where he worked until his retirement. Kent accrued 44 years of public accounting before retiring in June 2024. Though Kent worked with an international accounting firm and as a director of SEC reporting for a public company, his love of accounting and tax planning was found in helping entrepreneurial small and medium sized businesses, individuals, and nonprofit organizations. At the end of his career, it was his steady guidance and unwavering ethics that his colleagues and clients remembered most.
Kent possessed a servant heart and a love of community. For years, he worked with Junior Achievement of the Bluegrass, Fayette County Public Schools, and the Lansdowne Neighborhood Association. Kent’s passion for community was also evident in his work with Bluegrass Trust for Historic Preservation where he served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors.
The success he found in his career and philanthropic work was matched only by his love of the sport of swimming. Throughout his life, Kent could often be found in the pool or on the pool deck in some capacity.
Summers as a Dolphin for the Cherry Hill Swim Club sparked a love of swimming for Kent. The love of that sport continued to grow as he swam for the Northern Kentucky Piranhas and the State Championship winning Dixie Heights High School Colonels. The success he enjoyed ultimately earned him a scholarship to swim for the Eastern Kentucky University Electrifying Eels.
Kent continued his involvement in the swim community in his roles as President of the Lexington Dolphins as well as Treasurer of the Kentucky Swimming Board of Directors. Kent volunteered with the Signature Club Swim and Dive Team, the Central Kentucky Swim and Dive Conference, the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School Swim Team, and the University of Kentucky swim and dive team. Kent also served essential roles as an official with the KHSAA swimming and diving regional and state meets. It would be difficult to find an area of swimming in Kentucky that has not been touched in a positive way by the work of Kent Pleasants.
Kent was the foundation of his family’s success and happiness. He and Cathy watched their children grow, cheering for them in every endeavor. From Ryan’s baseball and basketball games to Cole and Carmen’s accomplishments in swimming to Lauren Ashley’s success in colorguard. His endless pride and admiration was always present. Kent saw his children become successful adults, who embodied his traits of compassion, love, wit and kindness.
Kent’s favorite chapter of life was most likely the time he spent with his two grandchildren, Hadley and Hannah. Kent helped Hadley mark the arrival of holidays by baking and decorating homemade cookies. Hannah loved kisses on the head at the kitchen island from Kent. Both girls developed a bond of devotion for their “Bigun” and loved his cuddles and kisses. Kent was surely happiest at home with his granddaughters, watching them grow, laugh and thrive, surrounded by love.
Kent’s compassion was remarkable. His love of family extended to so many friends as well. Kent was the patriarch of collective friendships made better by his existence.
Kent loved spending time at the pool, at the beach, on the sideline or in the stands. Wherever he was, there was joy, laughter, solace, and comfort. Indeed, everyone who knew him benefited from his devotion.
Kent’s life will be honored and celebrated on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Ballroom at the Signature Club of Lansdowne, located at 3256 Lansdowne Drive, Lexington, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Kent’s name to Bluegrass Trust for Historic Preservation, 201 North Mill Street, Lexington, KY 40507, or to any entity where you have experienced the kindness and compassion of Kent’s philanthropy and volunteer work.
Though it is so difficult to grapple with the loss of Kent, we will remember and honor his love, his humor, his unwavering devotion, and his commitment to service that we all strive to embody.
