James Bolger died at age 14 years old on November 29, 1895 in Donald, and was buried at Donald Cemetery in Donald, Buloke Shire County, VIC.

  • Introduction

    The Argus, Melbourne. 2nd December 1895. FATAL BOATING ACCIDENT. DONALD, Saturday. A sad drowning accident occurred at Banyenong yesterday, when James L. Bolger, 15 years of age, a son of Mr. Michael Bolger, farmer, of this district, lost his life by the capsizing of a boat on his father's dam, about 300 yards from the house. He had a mate with him, but he was on the bank at the time, and as he could not swim he could not help his friend. At an inquest held to-day before Mr. Carre, J.P., a verdict of accidental drowning was recorded.

In 1880, in the year that James Laurence Bolger was born, on February 4th, five members of one family in Ontario, Canada were killed and their farm was burned by a mob. Called the Black Donnelly Massacre, the Irish family had been feuding with other citizens of the town. No one was ever convicted.

In 1890, when he was only 10 years old, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.
