James Michael Meaney of Daylesford, Hepburn Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1887 in Creswick to James Meaney and Catherine Agnes O'Brien. He had siblings Maria Meaney, John Francis Meaney, Catherine Veronica Meaney, Francis Leo Meaney, Gerald Meaney, Terence Ambrose Meaney, Philip Meaney, Francis Xavier Meaney, Thomas Meaney, Vincent Joseph Meaney, Patrick Francis Meaney, and Martin Francis Meaney. He married Annie May (Shannon) Meaney, and had children John Francis Meaney, Eileen May Meaney, and Francis Edward Meaney. James Meaney died at age 60 years old on March 23, 1948 in Daylesford.

In 1887, in the year that James Michael Meaney was born, on January 20th, the US Senate gave the US Navy the right to lease Pearl Harbor as a naval base. Pearl Harbor is on the island of Oahu, a part of the Hawaiian Islands. The Navy was given direction to maintain "a coaling and repair station" at the harbor.

In 1909, by the time he was 22 years old, the New York Times published the first movie review. It was a report on D.W. Griffith's movie "Pippa Passes" also called "The Song of Conscience", a silent film. The review said that this work was moving away from "lurid material that attracted the wrath of censors and concerned citizens and toward more respectable ends. The movie was the story of a young female factory worker, on her day off, wandering and singing - thus changing the hearts of those around her towards good.
