He had siblings Neil, Margaret, Matilda, William, Robert, Wilhemina, George, and Jessie McAra. He served as a private in the Australian Infantry as part of the Unit 15th Australian Infantry Battalion. He served during World War I from about 1914-1921. James McAr was killed in action on August 8, 1915 in Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey.
