James Moore Newell 1918 - 1978

James Moore Newell was born in 1918 to Walter Colgate Newell and Violet Edith (Moore) Newell, and had siblings Laurence Colgate Newell, Lindsay Newell, Daisy Frances "Budge" (Newell) Blair, and Lancelot Huntly Newell. He married Betty Dansays (Espenett) Newell, and had children Jennifer Joan (Newell) Ross and Phillip Newell. James Newell died at age 59 years old on May 20, 1978 in Prahran, Stonnington City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery in Springvale, Greater Dandenong City County.

In 1918, in the year that James Moore Newell was born, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.

In 1945, when he was 27 years old, on January 9th, the (over 8 month long) Battle of Luzon began in the Philippines with the United States and Filipino forces attacking Japanese forces - with the intent to take back control of the Philippines. By March, the Allies had taken control of all of the strategically and economically important locations in the Philippines but pockets of resistance held out until the surrender of Japan in August.
