    James Patrick Marmion was born on December 12, 1915 in Manhattan, New York to parents Patrick Marmion (1877-) and Annie Harkins Marmion (1879-1945). He had siblings Mary, Anna, Julia, John, and Patrick Marmion. He lived in New York City and he registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, at the age of 24 in Long Island City, Queens, New York. At the time of his registration, James was employed by Stroheim & Romann. On October 12, 1942, James made the decision to enlist in the military, demonstrating his commitment to the cause. He joined the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA, as a private in the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component. After nearly four years of service, James was honorably discharged on January 26, 1946. On May 22, 1948 he married Margaret "Peggy" Driscoll (1923–2010). The couple had two daughters together.
