James Phillip Nicholas of Golden Square, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia was born on October 12, 1832 at - Green Ponds, in New Norfolk, Derwent Valley Council County, TAS to George Nicholas and Bertha Maria Loveridge Nicholas. He had siblings George Watkin Nicholas and Eliza Nicholas Espie. He married Louisa Leversha Nicholas in 1869, and had children Anne Nicholas and Edith Amy Nicholas Cocks. James Nicholas died at age 78 years old on March 6, 1911 in Golden Square, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC.

In 1832, in the year that James Phillip Nicholas was born, on August 2nd, the Bad Axe Massacre ended the last major Native American rebellion east of the Mississippi River. The Massacre was the last battle of the war between white settlers and militia in Illinois and Michigan Territory and the Sauk and Fox tribes. 400 - 500 of the Native American warriors were killed outright. Some escaped but were soon killed by Sioux, who were working with the US soldiers.
