He had siblings Billy Gene Gorrell, Floyd Edward Gorrell, Loyd William Gorrell, Johnnie Evelyn (Gorrell) Tyson, Lenard Del Gorrell, J. D. Gorrell, Betty Lou (Gorrell) Warren, and Patsy Irene (Gorrell) Emerich. He married Maryellen (Fagundez) Gorrell and they later divorced. James Gorrell died at age 72 years old on July 22, 2008.

Uncle Roger had a huge influence on me growing up. He was more like a father to me, than my own dad. Some of the old timers that knew him best, have told me that I'm just like him . Good, bad or indifferent... I take that as a compliment.
