HIGGS REUNION 09-19-1926

The Higgs family held their annual reunion at the Altamont City Park on September 19, 1926. About Seventy five persons were present, several being unable to attend for various reasons.
Those from out of the county were Mrs. Mary Gillespie of Pochahontas, Ill., Guy Gillespie of Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moccabee and two children of Lovington; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hampshire of Michigan; Ray Higgs and wife and Mr. and Mrs. Will Fretz of Terre Haute, Indiana.
A bountiful dinner was spread at the noon hour to which all did ample justice, but in spite of their best efforts a large supply of the good things were left over.

Five generations of the Higgs family, George W. Higgs was the oldest person present being nearly 95 years of age. He was the third white child born in Effingham County and has resided here continuously since It is very interesting to hear Mr. Higgs talk of the things of the past for he has seen many chages take place since his youth. He also tells of a visit to E. St. Louis when it was only a small hamlet or trading post.
Mr. Higgs is the father of eight chldren, six of whom are living. He also has thirty six grandchildren and seventy eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. There are in the Higgs family five generations, as follows: G. W. Higgs, 95 years old; E. F. Higgs Seventy four years old; Minnie Call, forty four years old, Celia Mocabee twenty four years old and Maxine Mocabee, age sixteen months.
During the years of his active life and work, Mr. Higgs was a farmer. Politically he has always been a stauch Democrat. For many years he has been a member of the M. E. Church at Salem, in Jackson Township. For several years past Mr. Higgs has made his home with his son James and family.
