James Smurl 1937 - 1981

James William Smurl of Scranton, Lackawanna County, PA was born on May 6, 1937 to James Richard Smurl. He married Helen Marie (Jones) on June 14, 1958 at St. Dominic's in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County United States, and had children James Gerald Smurl, Gerald James Smurl, Lori Ann (Smurl) Sibio, Kelli Marie (Smurl) Esgro, Joseph Shawn Smurl, Kimberly Ann Smurl, and Shawn Joseph Smurl. James Smurl died at age 44 years old in September 1981, and was buried at Cathedral Cemetery 1708 Oram St, in Scranton, Lackawanna County.

In 1937, in the year that James Smurl was born, on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
