On his January 1945 World War II draft card, James described himself as being five feet four inches tall and as weighing 120 pounds. He had brown eyes, black hair, and a "ruddy" complexion. James T. Whitney married Velma Mae "Toots" Barker (1934 - 2018) in 1952 and they had two sons, including Bruce Albert, born in 1957, and two daughters, including Maureen.
