James was born on May 16, 1918 in Henry County Alabama and had multiple full and half siblings including Annie Laura Nolan (1928-2009), Thomas Nolan (died 1965), Addie B Lisenby (born 1909) and Aaron Pete Lisenby (1916-1988). He joined the military on February 28, 1941 and served until his discharge date of May 27, 1945. He was married to Ruby Lee Adkinson (1924-1966) and they had two daughters together.
