James Wallace Sullivan 1902 - 1982

James Wallace Sullivan of Somerville, Shire of Mornington Peninsula County, VIC Australia was born on March 23, 1902 at Mount Lyell in Gormanston, West Coast Council County, TAS to Jessie Sullivan and James Sullivan. He had siblings Albert John Sullivan and Mary Stewart Sullivan. He married Annie Victoria Simcock in 1926, and had a child William Sullivan. James Sullivan died at age 80 years old in 1982 in Macleod, VIC.

In 1902, in the year that James Wallace Sullivan was born, the world famous Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, made the first gramophone recording by a popular singer. Accompanied by only a piano, his voice recordings became a big seller and did much to popularize the new-fangled gramophone. He had to sing into a metal "horn" that relayed his voice to a metal disc. And the songs had to be under 4 and a half minutes!
