James William Stephens of Brunswick, City of Merri-bek County, VIC Australia was born in 1882 in Collingwood, City of Yarra County to Maria Grinton Stephens and Joseph Stephens. He had siblings Emily Mabel Stephens, Joseph Garton Stephens, and Rupert James Stephens. He married Grace Kermic Ogilvie (Urquhart) Trenberth in 1911, and had a child Edna Mabel Stephens. James Stephens died at age 43 years old on June 16, 1926 in Brunswick, City of Merri-bek County.

In 1882, in the year that James William Stephens was born, on April 3rd, 34 year old outlaw Jesse James was shot in the back of the head by trusted friend and partner Robert Ford. Suspected of colluding with the Governor of Missouri, brothers Robert and Charley Ford were arrested, indicted, plead guilty, sentenced to be hung - then pardoned by the Governor. All in one day.
