In 1814, in the year that Jane Campbell was born, in August, the British captured Washington, DC and set fire to the White House and the Capitol building. President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, couldn't return to the White House when the British were driven out. It wasn't until 1817 that the White House became habitable again.
