    The Argus, Melbourne, 16 February 1898. CAIRNS.- On the 7th February, at her residence, Boneo, near Dromana, Victoria, and formerly of Alva, Stirlingshire, Scotland, Janet Dalgleish, the beloved wife of Alexander Cairns, farmer, Boneo, aged 70 years and 6 months.

In 1827, in the year that Janet Cairns ( Dalgleish was born, on May 25th, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge. The fountain pen would make inkwells obsolete. Poenaru's patent used a barrel made from a large swan quill (part of the feather).

In 1859, when she was 32 years old, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
